Summer
A nice wet spring sometimes turns to a hot dry summer and although all our hard work in the spring brings the lawns to a nice lush green color the summer is one of the most important seasons in maintaining your lawn.
This is another great opportunity to apply more of our fertilizer but watering is very important during this stage.
Please note that the weed product used is called Fiesta and is great for broadleaf weeds only such as dandelions, thistles etc. Great results are obtained in the spring and the fall. Trying to control small pedalled leaves in the summer such as clover, chickweed and knotweed have proven to be quite challenging as results for these small pedalled weeds is not great.

Ottawa Summer Tips
Cutting is extremely important. A dull mower blade will give the lawn a yellow-brown appearance. Cutting too short will cause your lawn to go brown and if the grass is allowed to grow too long once cut it will appear stalky and yellow. For best results cut weekly.
The best thing you can do in July and August is to have a good watering program, especially while the risk of grub damage is so high. A well watered lawn stays green and the root system grows rapidly, thus able to sustain and recover more quickly from grub damage. During a hot dry spell, do not wait for a rain. Soak the lawn thoroughly at the first signs of drying (usually a bluish tinge). Areas such as those along curbs and driveways require extra attention.
Irregular, sunken dead patches in an otherwise healthy lawn could be the telltale signs of insects. Most active in the summer months, they tend to cluster in the dried out areas of the lawn and kill the grass by sucking all the sap from the crown of the stem. Again, a good watering system program will discourage insects such as chinch bug, white grubs and sod webworm or aphids from damaging your lawn.
